A Legacy of Care: Celebrating LCMC’s Role in Winslow’s Health

6/23/2025

In a place like Winslow, where families often span generations in the same neighborhood or out on the land, community matters. It’s where stories are passed down, neighbors become family, and trust is earned over time, not assumed. As we reflect on Winslow’s heritage and the strength of the people who call this region home, we’re celebrating something quietly powerful: a local hospital that has stood beside the community for decades.

Many families in Winslow and across the surrounding communities have long-standing ties to Little Colorado Medical Center. For some, it’s where they were born, where they brought their children for checkups, and where they now return for physical therapy or specialty care. Their experiences reflect the story of LCMC. A hospital that has stood beside this community through every stage of life.

Where It All Began: A Hospital Rooted in Community

Little Colorado Medical Center began as Winslow Memorial Hospital. It was built to meet the medical needs of a growing railroad town and the surrounding communities, many of which were shaped by the rich history of Route 66 and the City of Winslow. For many elders in Winslow and on the reservation, memories of that hospital include stories of childbirth, broken bones, and family visits that ended with healing and gratitude.

Where it all Began

In 2004, the hospital became a designated Critical Access Hospital, helping ensure continued access to quality care in rural Northern Arizona. Since then, LCMC has remained committed to offering compassionate, community-first healthcare for all who walk through its doors.

And for people who were born here and stayed to raise families of their own, LCMC has been a constant presence during life’s biggest moments.

Care That Grows With You

As Winslow changed, so did the healthcare needs of its people. That’s why LCMC grew to meet those needs with new services and expanded space.

A Care that Grows with you

In 2010, the Little Colorado Physician’s Office (LCPO) opened to provide local families with access to everyday care like annual checkups, OB/GYN visits, urgent care, and more. Many residents recall the convenience of walking in with their kids for sports physicals or when the flu struck, knowing they’d see a familiar face behind the front desk.

By 2013, LCPO expanded again, adding 5,000 square feet and a broader range of specialty services. Families from across the region, including those traveling in from Hopi and Navajo lands, could get the care they needed closer to home, from providers who respected their culture and values.

Support in Every Season of Life

Healthcare isn’t just for emergencies. It’s something we all need throughout our lives. For many in Winslow and the surrounding communities, Little Colorado Medical Center is there through every season.

It starts with pediatric checkups and school physicals. Later, it might be managing asthma as a teenager, getting stitches after a sports injury, or stopping by the ER for a sudden illness. As adulthood approaches, healthcare may involve monitoring blood pressure, seeking assistance with joint pain, or finding support after surgery. And in later years, it may include physical therapy, managing chronic conditions, or simply having a provider who listens and understands your medical history.

Support in Every Season of Life

LCMC grows with you, offering the kind of care that fits your life, not just where it is, but where it’s going.

“As you grow, so do we.”

We continue to expand our services to include wound care, infusion therapy, and mental health telehealth, helping our neighbors stay close to home and receive the care they need. Because no matter what season you’re in, your health and comfort matter.

A Hospital That Feels Like Home

Trust doesn’t come from big buildings or advanced equipment. It comes from people. At LCMC, we work hard to earn that trust every day. We know our patients by name. We speak their languages. We understand that healing happens faster when you feel safe, heard, and respected.

A Hospital That Feels Like Home

We also understand that privacy matters, especially in a small town. That’s why we treat every visit, every conversation, and every patient with the care we would want for our own families. For those who’ve lived in Winslow or on the reservation for generations, that kind of care means everything. And we’re honored to be a part of it.

Looking Ahead, Together

The next generation of Winslow families is already walking through our doors. Young parents are choosing LCMC for prenatal visits, and specialty care is expanding. New investments are being made in technology and infrastructure to support our rural communities. As a Critical Access Hospital, LCMC plays a crucial role in addressing the healthcare needs of rural Arizonans, a role that organizations like the Arizona Rural Health Association continue to advocate for statewide.

Looking Ahead, Together

We’re proud of our past, but even more committed to the future. Because the heart of Winslow community healthcare is more than medicine. It’s people. It’s trust. It’s care that lasts a lifetime.
